Earlier this week, Apple officially announced the iOS 17 update for iPhones and iPads. The new update brought a host of new features and improvements while allowing third-party apps to support key authentication.

Essentially, this will allow users to log in using biometrics or face ID, eliminating the need to enter passwords. The technology was developed by the FIDO Alliance in collaboration with companies such as Apple, Google and Microsoft. Apple has supported password key entry in Safari and iCloud Keychain since iOS 16 and with the new update the feature was also open to third-party services.

1Password takes advantage of the iOS 17 update and has announced A new update to enable password key in its iOS app. The new feature works together with Apple’s own password manager and offers login with a password key to various services.

Steve Won, Chief Product Manager, 1Password notes:

Password keys are the best form of passwordless authentication that balances security and convenience, and 1Password is committed to enabling all businesses and consumers to adopt them. With Google, TikTok, and GitHub enabling the capabilities of password keys this summer, billions of people around the world now have the opportunity to embrace this exciting technology. Being first to market with a completely password-free experience represents our ongoing commitment to innovate simpler authentication with stronger security, and create a safer digital future for everyone

1Password also shared a list of features it brings along with Password Keys. These include the ability to manage password keys via a mobile or browser extension, organize password credentials, share a secure password, and receive key notifications for sites that support the feature. The company also plans to bring the ability to open 1Password vaults with keys in the future.

Launching in public beta this fall, 1Password customers will also start unlocking 1Password with a password key, offering world-class security combined with ease of use on any platform. Customers will be able to register on the mobile device of their choice and add trusted devices for a cross-platform experience at login.

If you use 1Password on iOS 17, you can go to the Apple App Store and Download the latest update. Note that while the 1Password app is free to install, you will need to pay a subscription fee to use the app.
