Alicia Vikander did not have the chance to play Lara Croft again as Angelina Jolie did in a Tomb Raider sequel. In 2018, Roar Uthaug’s film starring Alicia Vikander as the daring tomb robber was released. Fans wanted a sequel, and there were ideas in the works for quite some time, with a few bumps along the way. The hopeful return of Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft and the hiring of Misha Green as the film’s writer and director in 2021. The next year, however, MGM’s tardy approval of the film led to the studio losing the rights and the project’s cancellation. Vikander has moved on to other endeavors since then, with her most recent feature, Firebrand, premiering at the renowned Cannes feature Festival. Vikander told Variety during the occasion how devastating it was for her when they scrapped plans for a Tomb Raider sequel. She said it was devastating to have work abruptly halted just as they were getting ready to start filming since playing Lara Croft was like a dream come true. Although her time as Lara Croft has over, Vikander has shown her openness to further parts with comparable levels of action and intensity. After thinking it through, Vikander revealed: “I thought we were all set; we had a director and writer. But yeah, for me it was another one of those childhood dreams—to portray an action character was awesome, beyond what I ever thought I would do. And I really enjoyed the physicality of it. So, if another opportunity like that comes along, I’ll be interested.” MGM relinquished control of the Tomb Raider franchise to Amazon Studios after it was unable to sell it. Amazon has big hopes for the Tomb Raider property, and earlier this year they announced a Tomb Raider series for Prime Video, with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom screenwriter Phoebe Waller-Bridge attached to script. Moreover, it has been reported that a standalone Tomb Raider film is already under production and will have ties to both the Prime Video series and the next video games. There hasn’t been any announcement on who would play Lara Croft in the upcoming films. Angelina Jolie portrayed Lara Croft in cinematic adaptations of the iconic video game series that were released in 2001 and 2003. Both Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life were directed by acclaimed filmmakers; Simon West for the first film and Jan de Bont for the second. Jolie’s decision not to return for a third chapter put an end to discussions of making a third film in the series.
