Apple is reportedly working on an AI-enabled Safari 18 later this year

Apple is preparing to unveil Safari 18 later this year, and it will reportedly be equipped with a variety of features designed to improve the browsing experience. As reported by AppleInsider, the tech giant is testing a version of its Safari web browser packed with user interface improvements and an AI-powered tool called Intelligent Search.

It is expected that these unannounced features, tested alongside an internal version of iOS 18 and macOS 15, may make their way to end users as part of Safari 18 later this year, the report said.

Safari’s redesigned user interface consolidates essential controls into a one-page controls menu, easily accessible, in the address bar. The menu places several options such as zoom, reader mode, privacy controls, content blocking, extension shortcuts, web eraser, and an artificial intelligence summary tool, in one place.

Apple’s Smart Search could work similarly to the article summary feature available in the Arc browser, according to the release. The feature is designed to summarize text by identifying key phrases and topics on the web page.

Intelligent Search supposedly uses Apple’s in-device AI technology, specifically the Ajax language learning model, to provide AI-enhanced browsing and text summarization. However, in the trial build of Safari 18, the feature must be enabled manually from the New Page Controls menu.

Another feature in the works is called Web Eraser, which is again accessible through the Page Controls menu. As the name suggests, the feature allows you to remove unwanted parts of a web page such as banner ads, text, images or entire page sections.

The report says that Web Eraser remembers the content removed from a web page, it will remain so even if you close the original tab or window. The delete tool will remind you of the changes on your next visit, and offer the option to roll back the changes and see the unedited version.

However, Safari isn’t the only Apple software getting the AI treatment. The Cupertino giant was previously reported to be preparing artificial intelligence features for the iPhone’s upcoming software upgrade, namely iOS 18. According to reports, Apple also spent millions of dollars a day on its rival ChatGPT.
