Apple’s AI features will reportedly be powered by in-house silicon on a cloud

Published on

Apple is reportedly planning to enable AI features using its ARM silicon processors. According to Bloomberg, the Cupertino company will use its highest-end chips, such as the M2 Ultra, to power the servers in its data centers, which will help compute the resource-intensive features above the cloud. Simpler tasks, however, will seemingly be processed locally on Apple devices.

Apple has doubled down on implementing AI features in its products and ecosystem, under pressure from the likes of Google and Microsoft, both of which are scrambling to integrate AI features into their platforms.

The company recently announced the new iPad Air with M2 and iPad Pro with an M4 processor that includes a 16-core neural engine capable of processing 38 trillion operations per second, and it’s no surprise why Apple will market it as “Outrageous.” A powerful chip for AI,” although right now, it’s still in the iPad.

This is perhaps why Apple also plans to introduce a new processor, based on the M4, into its data centers, which will be able to process even more powerful tasks related to artificial intelligence.

New artificial intelligence features are expected to launch on Apple devices with the next versions of the iPhone, iPad and Mac operating systems. GenAI features like assisted messaging, text composition, translation, image creation and more are expected to make their way into the Apple ecosystem later this year. Most of Apple’s internal apps, such as Safari, Apple Music, Messages, Health, Numbers, Pages, Keynote, and even Shortcuts will have some AI features.

With iOS 18, Siri is also set to undergo a major overhaul and will likely feature a more human conversational experience with improvements in speed and accuracy as well.

Apple will announce more details at its upcoming WWDC 24 event.
