Avatar 2 is the likely winner after a huge box office weekend

Believe it or not, Avatar: The Way of Water has made over 1,4 billion dollars at the global box office. What is more unbelievable is that this figure isn’t enough yet to be considered to be the most profitable film for the Mouse House. Avatar is much closer to breaking even and turning a profit than predicted.

Avatar 2 is going to take place for the record books and the list is probably going to end up on top when everything is said and done.

James Cameron previously revealed that Avatar 2 should gross at least $2 billion to break even though Variety notes the actual figure is much closer. It’s reported that Disney needs the Avatar sequel to gross $1.5 billion, which is $500 million less than what Cameron claimed before and just a hundred million more dollars away from the production’s current box office take.

It is unclear why Cameron said a sum of $2 billion, but he could’ve been considering other factors by himself. Even if Avatar 2 had to only cost 1.5 billion dollars to be a financial success, Disney might need a much more substantial sum to do what is left of the film, though the rest of the theaters are already enlisting. Keep in mind that there are at least three sequels planned after Avatar 2 and most of them are expected to be equally expensive.

With that said, the current and even though still-on-going success of Avatar 2 just proved that Cameron’s risky plans for the franchise have just improved and he’ll probably return for the final two films.

If you look at this calendar, the next real competitor of Avatar: The Way of Water is Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which won’t premiere until February 16. Realistically, the two could coexist in films and Avatar two’s theatrical run could extend so far into March. Avatar is in theaters for 34 weeks, although the remainder of the money it made came during the first 14 weeks. With a lot of money, Avatar can’t go to bed until a late March, especially by early April.

Ironically, Warner Bros. Discovery delayed Shazam! I think God will ruin this particular scenario.

Disney is probably looking for a way to reduce the costs of the rest of the Avatar films.
