BitLocker “65000” bug in Windows 11 and 10 finally fixed, Microsoft confirms

Published on

Back in October 2023, Microsoft confirmed an issue that affected all Windows client versions, be it Windows 11 (22H2, 21H2), Windows 10 (22H2, 21H2 and Enterprise LTSC 2019), and later Windows 11 23H2 was affected as a result. . The bug was related to the reporting of BitLocker CSP encryption. The BitLocker configuration service provider (CSP) is used by the organization to manage the encryption of computers and devices.

The error code “65000” was displayed in the “Device encryption required” setting in Intune for Mobile Device Management (MDM). The tech giant noted that apart from Intune, similar third-party apps may also be affected.

It explained:

Using the FixedDrivesEncryptionType or SystemDrivesEncryptionType policy settings on the BitLocker Configuration Service Provider (CSP) node in Mobile Device Management (MDM) applications may incorrectly display a 65000 error in the “Device encryption required” setting for certain devices in your environment.

The affected environments are those with the “Enforce drive encryption type on operating system drives” or “Enforce drive encryption on fixed drives” policy set to On and selecting either “Full encryption” or “Used space only”. Microsoft Intune is affected by this issue, but third-party MDM components may also be affected. Important: This issue is a reporting issue only and does not affect drive encryption or other device issue reporting, including other BitLocker issues.

So Microsoft promised a fix and in the meantime offered a solution.

A few days ago, Microsoft finally confirmed that the bug had been fixed. The issue has already been resolved with the January updates, although Microsoft may have done additional testing to make sure the fix definitely works before closing the issue.

On the Windows Health Dashboard website, he writes:

solving the problem: This issue is resolved by Windows updates released on January 23, 2024 (KB5034203) and later. We recommend that you install the latest security update for your device. It contains important improvements and fixes for issues, including this one.
