It seems that Google is in the process of improving the read aloud feature in Chrome for Android. MSPowerUser discovered some developments that Google is working on that hinted at a background playback option for Read Aloud.

Chrome’s Android app lets you listen to text written on a web page. To do this, you need to click on the More button (three dots) in the upper left corner > Listen to this page. A mini-player appears at the bottom of your screen with controls to play, rewind, fast forward, manage reading speed, choose your favorite voice, and more.

While the text is being read aloud, you can browse the current site or switch to other browser tabs. The feature also highlights the text and automatically scrolls the site to help you keep track of it.
