EVE Online developer CCP Games announced a new partnership with the scientific research organisation MMOs and Human Protein Atlas. They created a new minigame named Project Discovery that asked players to spot features in cells in exchange for rewards in the game. This minigame has been used for real-life research on gene expression, to find exoplanets orbiting distant stars, and most recently to help the COVID research.

The next phase is trying to analyze the flow cytometry data for the study of several immune system diseases and cancers. The data from players can reportedly be aggregated so that it generates same reliable results as a paid professional, and this will train AI to analyse sample scales. Researchers even confirmed that individual players have had more accurate analysis than professionals.

CCP neither wanted nor was granted any control or influence over the coverage we received of the event. If someone can go to a cure for cancer, its probably EVE players.
