Version 3.4 of Files is now available for download from the Microsoft Store. This popular alternative to Windows 11’s File Explorer has received several new features and improvements in the latest update. Users can now set custom backgrounds, remap shortcuts, filter filenames in real-time, and use Listary within the Files app.

Here’s what’s new:

  • Backgrounds: You can now create custom themes. Go to Settings > Appearance and click on “Background Image”. Alternatively, right-click any image and select Set As > Set As App Background. The app also allows you to adjust the opacity of the background.

  • Customize shortcuts: A new settings page allows you to change existing keyboard shortcuts.

  • Real time filtering: Typing in the search box now instantly filters the folder to show only the files that match your search criteria.

  • my list: This powerful search app for Windows is now integrated into the Files app. You can enable it in settings to get instant search results, rich context menus, better folder navigation and more.

  • New localization: The Files app now supports Albanian, Khmer, Kurdish and Lithuanian languages.

  • The Recent Files widget now respects the setting to show file extensions
  • Improving the display of keyboard shortcuts in the command panel
  • Added sidebar support for multiple SharePoint drives
  • Added integration for the Lucid Link cloud provider
  • Added audio and video bitrate to the properties list in the details panel
  • Fixed an issue where pinned items were not displayed in the sidebar
  • Fixed a problem when clicking on the title in the details view would not change the sort direction
  • Fixed an issue where the adaptive layout option was not disabled when syncing layout settings
  • Fixed an issue where changing sort preferences did not work correctly when syncing layout settings
  • Fixed an issue where existing tabs would be duplicated when opening a folder outside of files
  • Fixed an issue where the properties window would not navigate between pages after returning from advanced settings
  • Fixed an issue where the app sometimes crashed when entering characters into the address bar
  • Fixed the alignment of the add tab button
  • Fixed an issue where the Git submenu was sometimes displayed for non-GitHub repos
  • Fixed a crash that sometimes occurred when closing the GitHub login modal
  • Fixed an issue where the Recycle Bin was not pinned to the sidebar by default
  • Fixed an issue where the Show More and Open All options were disabled in the Tags widget
  • Fixed an issue where the scroll position was sometimes incorrect
  • Fixed an issue where “scroll to previous folder” did not work in some folders
  • Fixed an issue where HWiNFO64.exe would not open
  • Fixed an issue where changing the focus in the column view caused an additional animation
  • Fixed an issue where the app window would not refocus if minimized on launch
  • Fixed an issue where the collisions dialog was not appending numbers when pasting files
  • Fixed an issue where renaming an item in the collision dialog would leave the copy in progress status
  • Fixed an issue where the margins of the setting control were not aligned
  • Fixed a problem exporting tags
  • Fixed an issue where certain drive icons were not loading in the Drive Widget
  • Fixed an issue where ftp addresses were not displayed in the address bar
  • Fixed an issue where tackling or moving a folder would cause the contents of the destination folder to empty
  • Fixed an issue where there wasn’t enough room to right-click folders in the column view
  • Fixed an issue where the wrong item was displayed as active in the sidebar
  • Fixed an issue where holding the arrow key would cause the preview pane to freeze
  • Fixed a problem with editing properties of several items at the same time
  • Fixed conflict with svg thumbnails generated by PowerToys
  • Fixed an issue with overlapping brushes leaving a gap in the column view
