Fortnite iOS Return is in the cards for 2023

Epic Games Fortnite hasn’t been available on iOS since 2020. The recent change to the app store, making a Fortnite move to the web, could open the door for a backdoor. A new EU legislation could force a change in Apple’s technology ecosystem, so that Fortnite can return.

Until the end of the year, Fortnite iOS will return.

The European Union will address a digital gatekeeping issue in 2023 by Apple and Google. This is what opens up the possibility of a Fortnite iOS return in 2023. It will force Apple to allow different apps to be installed to give users the best possible freest of their devices, and to use third-part marketplaces on them.

Apple usually has strict controls over what players are able to install. This is what lets them enforce policies like taking a cut of purchases, since developers and publishers don’t have one more option if they want to use the large native version of Fortnite on iOS.

The Digital Markets Act is going to apply to the EU. It will mean that Epic can publish Fortnite on iOS without engaging with the official app store, giving them a way to start off on the devices without giving Apple its cut. It’ll not cease the continuing dispute between Epic and Apple, but it will allow for a Fortnite iOS return.

Apple and Epic Games originally clashed over a specific rule from apple offering a cut of their in-app purchases. This is why some services like Twitter have to pay a lot more for apps. Players on Android reacted to this restriction by using a third-party installation of Fortnite. That is prohibited by Apple in particular. This led to a loss of Fortnite, and a long legal battle ensued.

Is Fortnite Mobile coming back?

Apple is changing a rules, but it isn’t a guarantee that Fortnite will return. Apple was forced to change similar predatory practices. Recently, the EU forced them to use more generic USB-connected phones than their proprietary cables.

There’s also the possibility Apple clings to its control outside Europe. It seems like they won’t standardize the iPhone with a USB cable outside Europe. You can only let it take less than 100 days to do so. As an example, Fortnite won’t be played in Europe until 2023.

Fortnite iOS return would be a great bonus for mobile players. It would be great to get one of the most popular Battle Royales back on mobile devices to join Apex Mobile and other players. We still have a bit off.
