Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) announced the Mater 1.3 specification for smart home devices, adding support for EV chargers, home appliances, water management and energy management devices.

Matter is a smart home interoperability standard built through the joint efforts of popular technology companies. Samsung and Google are among the members and early adopters of the first specification Matter 1.0 released in October 2022.

The Matter 1.3 specification and SDK are now available for device manufacturers to integrate into their new and existing products. B Blog postThe covenant stated:

This latest release marks an important step forward, enabling devices that can be more useful to users in the kitchen and laundry room, improve entertainment and smart home interaction on screens, and make the smart home more efficient and safer with new support for energy and water management. .

The addition of these new device types and functionality in Mater 1.3 allows product manufacturers and controllers to begin implementing and validating these features in new and existing products.

The updated smart home specification will equip EV chargers with consumer-friendly features such as the ability to manually start/stop charging, adjust the charging rate or decide how many miles to add until a specified discharge time.

Matter 1.3 enables energy devices to report real-time data such as voltage, current and power consumption or production. The specification now supports water management devices such as rain sensors, controllable water valves and leak and freeze detectors, allowing users to monitor and manage water “in and around their homes”.

Microwaves, ovens, hobs, hoods and tumble dryers are now part of Matter’s expanded list of supported appliances. The alliance explains that users will be able to control features such as cooking time, power level and operating mode of microwaves. They will receive messages like “food ready” or “end of cycle” when the microwave does the job.

Matter already supports washing machines and the new update will allow users to set the dryer mode and target temperature on their washer dryer, the alliance said, adding that users will be able to remotely start or stop their dryer if local safety regulations allow it.

Adding more to the TV functionality, Matter 1.3 improves interaction with devices in the home, allowing other Mater-enabled devices to send messages to TVs or other devices with screens. For example, it will notify through the TV when a robotic vacuum cleaner is stuck or the laundry is finished.
