Microsoft today released Patch Tuesday updates for June 2024. We covered them in their dedicated articles here: Windows 11 (KB5039212 / KB5039213) and Windows 10 (KB5039211 / KB5039217 / KB5039214 / KB5039225).
Meanwhile, the company also released a new anti-malware Defender update package for Windows OS installation images, namely Windows Imaging Format (WIM) and VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) formats. The latest settings support Windows 11, all editions of Windows 10, and Windows Servers 2016 and 2019. This update package is necessary because a Windows installation image may contain old and outdated anti-malware settings and software binaries. Besides better security, these updates can also provide improved performance benefits in some cases.
Microsoft provides the latest security settings for Windows images through Security Intelligence Update version 1.411.111.0. Defender package version is 1.411.111.0. In the support document describing the new update, Microsoft Explains:
The first few hours of a newly installed Windows deployment may leave the system vulnerable due to the Microsoft Defender protection gap. This is because OS installation images may contain outdated anti-malware binaries.
[..] Devices using Windows’ built-in antivirus or other security solution can benefit from these updates.
[..] This article describes an anti-malware update package for Microsoft Defender on OS installation images (WIM and VHD files). This feature supports the following OS installation images:
- Windows 11
- Windows 10 (Enterprise, Pro and Home editions)
- Windows Server 2022
- Windows Server 2019
- Windows Server 2016

This package updates the anti-malware client, anti-malware engine, and signature versions in the operating system installation images to the following versions:
- Platform version: 4.18.24050.7
- Engine version: 1.1.24050.2
- Security intelligence version: 1.411.111.0
From Microsoft’s security bulletin, we learn that security intelligence updates Version 1.411.111.0 was released last month. It adds threat detection for various trojans, adware, and backdoor exploits, among others. For those wondering, the latest intelligence update is version 1.413.230.0 at the time of writing.
