Microsoft is bringing back the accidentally published Copilot app on Windows Server in the latest Edge update

Published on

Microsoft has released a new update for Edge 124 in the stable channel. Version 124.0.2478.67 is now available for download with some important changes, fixes and security fixes.

For starters, the latest Edge 124 update removes the 8KB Copilot app that was “accidentally” released on Windows Server and other editions. Installing Edge 124.0.2478.67 will remove “Microsoft Chat Provider for Copilot on Windows” from the list of installed apps:

Removes “Microsoft Chat Provider for Copilot on Windows” from Windows Server devices. The component was incorrectly installed on some devices in a previous update of Microsoft Edge.

The change appears to only affect Windows Server, and in another documentMicrosoft says a future update will mitigate the problem in consumer editions of Windows:

An upcoming version of Microsoft Edge is expected to remove or adjust the installation of this component on specific client devices.

Besides removing the unnamed hacker, Microsoft Edge 124.0.2478.67 adds HTTP download security warnings (Microsoft plans to enable it in Edge 127) and user extension request emails for IT administrators:

Notice: Insecure downloads via HTTP

Users who download potentially dangerous content on HTTP sites will receive a user interface warning, (for example, “sample.exe cannot be downloaded securely”). The user can still choose to continue by selecting “Save” in the “…” menu of the downloaded item. Administrators can also use the InsecureContentAllowedForUrls policy to specify HTTP sites where the warning will be rejected. Triggering the warning on the Edge 124 was accidental. We’ve put back the warning in this stable version. Administrators can use the InsecureDownloadWarnings feature flag to test the impact of this upcoming feature.

Email notifications for extension requests in the Microsoft Edge Admin Service.

The Microsoft Edge Admin Service now provides administrators with the ability to receive email notifications about extensions that their users have requested. Once activated, this will help inform them instantly of any new pending requests they may have.

Finally, the latest Microsoft Edge update fixed three security vulnerabilities in Chromium:

You can update Microsoft Edge to version 124.0.2478.67 by going to edge://settings/help. If the user takes no action, the browser will automatically update itself on the next restart.
