Obsidian’s Spy Protocol RPG Alpha is quietly returning to Steam after being decommissioned in 2019

In a surprising update, Alpha protocol Returned to Steam. Publisher Sega has not announced at the time of writing this article about the sudden appearance of the classic title. However, as some fans have discovered, the store page is already backed up with a purchase option, and it’s even discounted as part of the ongoing Steam 2024 Summer Sale.

The game was originally removed from Steam in 2019, depriving gamers of the only official place to purchase it for a modern platform. The removal was attributed to his music licenses having expired.

Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, known for its RPG hits like Pillars of Eternity, Fallout New Vegasand the outer worlds, this RPG originally released in 2010. Starring Michael Thornton, a rookie agent who joins an American spy agency called Alpha Protocol, the title offers stealth and action gameplay as well as tough decisions that affect the storyline.

Interestingly, Alpha Protocol went back on sale earlier this year through the GOG store as well. This DRM-free re-release brought improvements such as a licensed soundtrack, achievements, controller support, localizations, support for modern operating systems, and cloud saving. These improvements were made thanks to the team between GOG and Obsidian.

Sega has seemingly put the game back on sale on Steam exactly as it was in 2019, possibly after resolving the licensing issues. It is not clear what is happening behind the scenes.
