OneDrive shared folders in Windows 11 have suddenly become Internet shortcuts like some virus

Published on

Shared Folder, a key feature in Microsoft OneDrive, is reportedly broken right now according to several online user reports. We were informed about this problem by a Neowin reader. The folders added using “Add a shortcut to my files” option They seem to have been replaced by web shortcuts.

It looks like the problem was first reported by me PradeepSG In the Microsoft forum. They wrote:

Folders shared with me sync as a web shortcut in OneDrive on a Windows PC

Hey. I had several folders shared from different users in my OneDrive account. I added the folders to my OneDrive with the Add Shortcut to OneDrive from Cloud Shared Folders button. The account is connected to a Windows PC and all files, including the folders shared with me, synced fine until yesterday. Last night the shared folders were completely removed from the Windows computer and the folders are replaced with internet shortcuts. .… I’ve tried unlinking the account and linking it back, changing the location of OneDrive on my Windows PC and trying to share a new folder to my account and add it to OneDrive. Nothing works so far.

This query has been voted on by 240 others at the time of writing, indicating that the problem is quite common.

Another user kaydee8888 Those who also faced the same problem also managed to find a solution:

I’ve had my One Drive account for a few years now. My main account is logged in on my laptop. I have 4 other users sharing their folder with edit access to my main account. I add them as a shortcut to my main account. Previously, on my laptop, they function as folders. I mean, I can move, delete, add files and they actually function as a folder. Now, all of my shared folder from my other users suddenly becomes a shortcut. When I open the folder, it brings me to the browser so I can go in and view them.

Edit Update: I can fix this by logging into One Drive with my other user account. It seems that not all accounts are affected, only some. I know this is not a permanent solution but at least temporary.

So it seems that whatever the bug is, it doesn’t affect all accounts in the same way that the user was able to sign in through another account to access shared folders. This is also evident from some of the responses to these threads.

Interestingly, a Feedback Hub user suggests that Microsoft may seemingly remove the option entirely. The user claims that he was notified of this change by “customer support”. the user Richie V Author:

Shortcut to shared OneDrive folder in personal accounts

I was notified by customer support that adding a shortcut to a shared folder to the “My Files” section is being removed from individual OneDrive accounts. It’s a big mess.

Oddly enough, this was published a month ago, which is before the time when most of the reports started appearing. However, it also only has a few upvotes, which means not many people have had the same experience. We will have to wait for Microsoft’s official announcement on the matter.

Thanks for the tip, TReKiE!
