The PlayStation 6 is coming, but it won’t be here until at least 2027. That’s the good news for Sony’s arguments against the Microsoft/Activision merger, just published by the UK CMA today.

Both of these arguments speak volumes about the future and what could happen if the merger were to go through. The 22-page document says that Sony “firmly believes that the Transaction will harm competition, industry participants, innovation and consumers.” Meanwhile, Microsoft said the merger “is fundamentally pro-competitive because it increases competition in a market long dominated by Sony.” Microsoft even admitted that Sony’s own games “are of better quality.”

Ultimately, it will be the CMA who decides if this commercial transaction takes place, but there was an interesting piece of information. Expanding on the importance of Call of Duty, Sony’s document says that “Microsoft has offered to continue making Activision games available on PlayStation only until 2027,” adding that five years “is a very long time.” unsuitable” to find a replacement.

“By the time SIE released the next generation of its PlayStation console (which will likely be around XXX), it would have lost access to Call of Duty and other Activision titles, making it extremely vulnerable to consumer switching and subsequent downgrade. of its competitiveness, Sony pointed out.

Sony has an idea of when the PS6 will be out, which was redacted by the CMA, but previous statements confirm that it will be until 2027 at least before we get next-gen. That’s on schedule, given that the PS4 launched in 2013 and the PS3 in 2006, but this generation is proving slower than previous ones.

Microsoft has repeatedly stated that it has no plans to remove Call of Duty from the PlayStation and has argued that Candy Crush is a much bigger franchise. Sony’s counter-argument is that it’s not competing in the mobile space and is only concerned with consoles. Being one of the biggest franchises in the world, Call of Duty has a lot of influence on console sales. We’ll see if Sony’s argument is convincing when the CMA delivers its verdict.
