It’s time for PowerToys users to hit that update button and switch to a newer version. PowerToys 0.82 is out now with stability, bug fixes, improvements and a bunch of new features for existing modules. There are no new “toys” in today’s release, but Microsoft promises to release something new in the next update under version 0.83.

Here are the main points of the update:

  • A new feature has been added to PowerRename to allow using random character sequences and UUIDs when renaming files.
  • Improvements to the Paste As JSON feature to better handle other CSV separators and conversion from ini files.
  • Fixed many crashes reported to Microsoft servers.
  • Fixed UI issues reported after upgrading to WPF UI in Color Picker and PowerToys Run.

The rest of the changelog includes the following:

Advanced infection

  • Add a GPO rule to prohibit the use of online models in Advanced Paste. (This was a hotfix for 0.81)
  • Improved CSV separator handling and plain text parsing for the Paste as JSON feature.
  • Added support for converting from ini in the Paste as JSON feature.
  • Fixed a memory leak caused by images not being properly cleared from the board history.
  • Added option to hide the UI when it loses focus.
  • Improved telemetry to get better data on token usage and if board history is a popular feature.

The color picker

  • Fixed the opaque background corners in the selector that were shown after upgrading to WPFUI.

Developer Files Preview (Monaco)

  • Improved syntax highlighting for .gitignore files.
  • Testing the sticky scroll option in the code-behind was done twice. Removed one of the checks.

Environment Variables Editor

  • Added clarity to UI section tips.

File Explorer add-ons

  • Fixed a crash when the preview handlers received a 64-bit handle from the OS.
  • Fixed a crash when trying to update the window borders and File Explorer has already removed the preview.

find my mouse

  • Added option to use Windows + Control keys to run.

Hosts File Editor

  • Improved spacing settings in the UI so that the hostname is not hidden when resizing and the icons are well aligned.
  • Added horizontal scrolling instead of scrolling in the additional lines dialog box.
  • Improved the logic of the duplicate check to improve performance and take into account features introduced after it.

Installer

  • Fixed remaining installation failures where the folders where the DSC module is supposed to be installed are not accessible to the WiX installer for user-scoped installations.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the ARM 64 uninstall process to not correctly find Powershell 7 to run uninstall scripts.

take a peek

  • Prevent Peek from running when the user renames the file.
  • Added support for previewing special folders like the Recycle Bin and My Computer instead of throwing an error.
  • Fixed a crash caused by double releasing a COM object from the module interface.

Rename power

  • Improved apostrophe handling for the flags to change the names of the letters and the title.
  • Added a feature that allows using random character sequences or UUIDs when renaming files.

PowerToys Run

  • Improving the plugin descriptions for consistency in the user interface.
  • Fixed UI scaling for different dpi scenarios.
  • Fixed a crash in race mode when updating UWP icon paths in the program plugin.
  • Fixed PowerToys launch hangs when trying to close an unresponsive window in the WindowWalker plugin.
  • Corrected the example in the UnitConverter description to reduce confusion with inches abbreviation (now uses “to” instead of “in”).
  • Restored the acrylic background and applied a correct fix to the title bar’s highlight showing through transparency.
  • Fixed an issue that caused transparency to disappear from the interface after a while.

quick accent

  • Add the number symbol and a double sharp accent character.
  • Add the characters of the international phonetic alphabet.
  • Fixed the position of the character description center.
  • Added feminine and masculine ordinal indicator characters to the Portuguese character set.

screen bar

  • Update the default startup key to Win+Control+Shift+M, so as not to conflict with Windows Explorer’s built-in shortcut that restores minimized windows (Win+Shift+M).

Definitions

  • Disabled the UI to enable/disable clipboard history on the Advanced Paste Settings page when clipboard history is disabled by a system GPO. (This was a hotfix for 0.81)
  • Updated the advanced paste settings and the OOBE page to make it clear that using AI is optional and opt-in. (This was a hotfix for 0.81)
  • Fixed a typo on the advanced paste settings page.
  • Added localization support for the “Set OpenAI Key” button on the Advanced Paste settings page.
  • Fixed additional GPO warnings showing on advanced paste settings page even if the module is disabled.
