Purchasers of Cities: Skylines II DLC get a refund, the studio pledges to improve the base game

When Cities: Skylines II Launched six months ago, the much-anticipated city builder received a huge amount of criticism for its major performance issues and visualization bugs. Developer Colossal Order has been slowly pushing out bugfix updates since then to fix some of the more major issues, while it also released the game’s first paid content pack, the Beach Properties DLC, just last month. User reviews are overwhelmingly negative.

Now, b DisclaimerParadox Interactive VP Mattias Lilja and Colossal Order CEO Mariina Hallikainen announced “immediate and significant changes” to how the game’s development will proceed.

This will begin with full refunds to anyone who purchased the Beach Properties DLC pack. The developer says the DLC was rushed and shouldn’t have been pushed out in its current state. Instead, its content is available to all players as part of a game update.

This is how the return process of beach assets will be handled in each store:

steam

  • If you purchased Coastal Assets separately or through a Steam bundle (expansion card pack or Coastal Assets Pack) you will automatically be refunded the amount equal to the cost of Coastal Assets directly to your Steam Wallet.

Microsoft

  • If you purchased beach properties separately or through a package (expansion card package or beach property package) you will receive a refund of the amount equal to the cost of beach properties. We will soon share the details on how to make refunds.

Paradox store

  • If you bought the Beach Assets, the Beach Assets Pack or the expansion card through the Paradox Store, you will receive an automatic refund. If you purchased the Expansion Pass, you’ll keep your access to Instant Opening Station and Deluxe Relax but will need to make a new purchase for any upcoming content.

key distributor

  • If you bought the beach property or the beach property package through an approved third-party developer, you will be eligible for a refund. Please contact your retailer for information on how to do this, as this may vary between sellers.

Physical (Premium Edition)

  • To that end, the same terms as the Ultimate Edition apply. Beach Properties is not sold separately as a physical box, but is included in the premium edition. For those of you who have redeemed your codes, you will automatically receive the additional content when it is released.

While Ultimate Edition buyers are not getting refunds due to this glitch, the studio will instead compensate them with three additional creator packs and three radio stations sometime in the future.

Aside from the refunds, Colossal Order says it will now focus fully on improving the base game and the recently released modding tools. Paid content will only work after the game reaches a stable state through free updates. The studio adds that this means the Bridges and Ports expansion pack is being pushed to 2025.

Furthermore, Paradox and Colossal Order say they will work with a team of player representatives from the community to hear concerns and share future development plans for the game, to make sure “we don’t repeat the same mistakes we’ve made in the past.”

God Cities: skylines The development of the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 II versions was also discussed today. Paradox says optimization efforts are still ongoing for this release by a separate team, but they’re not currently in a good enough state to give a firm release timeframe. However, if some of the upcoming test houses show improvement, console players may be able to jump in as early as October, 2024.
