Sony is delaying half of its 12 live service projects to focus on quality

Last year, Sony announced that it planned to bring a large number of first-party life service games to market, expanding outside of its usual repertoire of single-player adventures. While it was originally revealed as 10 projects, today on an earnings call, it was revealed that the live service games in development have increased to 12.

While the number grew, half were hit by internal delays. Instead of releasing the entire lot by March 2026, as originally announced, six have been postponed indefinitely.

“We are looking into it… we are trying as much as possible to ensure [these games] Enjoyed and loved by gamers for a long time,” says Sony President, COO and CFO Hiroki Totoki. “[Of] The 12 titles, six titles will be released by FY25 – that’s our current plan. Sony acquired the fate studio Bungie in 2022 for 3.6 billion as part of its heavy axis to develop live service titles. The studio is said to lend its expertise to other Sony studios for their debut games on the live service. Bungie’s marathon and Naughty Dog’s the last of us A multiplayer part should be part of this 12 game set.

Recently, a report stated that Bungie’s revenue from Fate 2 dropped sharply, with layoffs and delays in the project (including for marathon) also happens. With Sony PlayStation chief Jim Ryan set to retire in 2024, it’s unclear what direction the company will take going forward for its first-party studios.
