The founding father of Square Enix’s lately bought Eidos-Montréal studio has stated that the Japanese firm might have bought its western builders to gear up for a Sony acquisition.
Stephane D’Astous made the touch upon Tuesday (July 26), after resigning from Eidos-Montréal in 2013 because of the “lack of leadership, lack of courage and the lack of communication.”
D’Astous has stated that he’s heard Square Enix bought off a lot of its western IP and studios like Crystal Dynamics, Square Enix Montréal and Eidos-Montréal to Embracer Group to make itself extra palatable for a possible Sony acquisition (through GamesIndustry.biz).
“If I read between the lines, Square Enix Japan was not as committed as we hoped initially. And there are rumours, obviously, that with all these activities of mergers and acquisitions, that Sony would really like to have Square Enix within their wheelhouse,” defined D’Astous. “I heard rumours that Sony said they’re really interested in Square Enix Tokyo, but not the rest. So, I think [Square Enix CEO Yosuke] Matsuda-san put it like a garage sale.”
According to D’Astous, that is why Square Enix bought the three studios and numerous IPs for a comparatively low £240million ($300million) price ticket. He compares it to the just about £1billion ($1.3billion) Embracer paid for Gearbox, and the way it reveals the worth of what Square Enix bought.
“[Gearbox] have principally Borderlands and others, and Eidos has 5 instances the IPs. So why 4 instances much less? I assume there weren’t a whole lot of key folks . And it reveals the well being of the worth of the potential of Eidos, sadly.
“It was a train wreck in slow motion, to my eyes, anyway. It was predictable that the train was not going in a good direction. And maybe that justified $300million. That’s really not a lot. That doesn’t make sense.”
It seems then that the Japanese department of Square Enix was probably trying in the direction of a Sony acquisition, resulting in the promoting of western builders and IP on the cheaper aspect, According to what D’Astous had heard beforehand.
