The new app store for ChromeOS to make app discovery a breeze on Chromebooks

According to the latest report, it looks like ChromeOS users will soon have a central location to download the best apps and games for their Chromebooks. ChromeOS allows users to run PWAs (Progressive Web Apps), Linux apps, and even Android apps without breaking a sweat.

However, you have to go through different sources to download different types of these apps on your Chromebooks. Fortunately, that is changing soon. The latest report of Chrome Unboxed Introducing a new ‘App Mall’ in ChromeOS that will make it easier to explore different types of apps.

The App Store is available for preview and is also available to non-Chromebook users. In order to use the App Mall, you need to enable the flag: “chrome://flags/#cros-mall” in the canary channel of ChromeOS 126. Once the flag is enabled, it will add the App Mall icon to the shelf and the app launcher.

According to the video, the layout of the app store looks quite similar to the existing Explore app. The app store gets dedicated sections for search, home page, apps and games. On selecting an app, it will show you the app description, screenshots and the ability to download the app from various sources. In the preview version of App Mall, only Android and web apps are available, and Linux apps are not.

Installing the PWAs doesn’t force you to go to the Chrome browser and click through the steps, as you normally would, to get them. Installation is handled by the ChromeOS App Mall itself.

Many apps are only available through the Play Store. In case the app has different sources available, it will give you a drop-down menu from which you can select web/PWA and Android. Since Linux apps are not available, you won’t see the Linux option in the dropdown menu.

These are early days for the App Mall feature, and it’s expected to be feature-rich in the coming days. The app store is labeled as ‘experimental’, indicating that more improvements are on the cards for the feature.
