The Tiny11 builder, which lets you blow up any Windows 11 with PowerShell, adds ESD support

It looks like NTDEV, the developer that publishes tiny11 Builder is in development. The utility has been receiving updates almost every other day lately. This is just a few days after he disabled the telemetry.

If you like using PowerShell and scripting, you’ll probably enjoy using the tiny11 builder. With this tool, the developer wants to help users automate the creation of bloated and efficient Windows 11 images using Microsoft’s DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) command-line interface.

With this latest release earlier today, the tiny11 builder can now also support ESD files in addition to WIM. It also completely removes all Microsoft Edge components and fixes a registry bug as well. The release note for The latest update says:

Tiny11 Builder – Release 01-05-24

This new release of tiny11 builder allows the ability to use images with ESD files instead of the standard WIM. It also suppresses some of the output, making it easier to keep track of what’s going on.
It also cleans off the last remnants of Edge! Last but not least, it fixes a registry problem.

The dev also left instructions on how to use the tiny11 builder:

Instructions:

  1. Download Windows 11 from the Microsoft website (https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11)
  2. Mount the downloaded ISO image using Windows Explorer.
  3. Select the drive letter where the image is installed (only the letter, without the colon (:))
  4. Select the SKU you want the image to be based on.
  5. sit back and relax 🙂
  6. When the image is complete, you’ll see it in the folder where the script was extracted, named tiny11.iso

In case you are not aware, ESD or Electronic Software Download, like WIM or Windows Imaging Format, is an image format for the purpose of distributing the Windows operating system. Unlike WIM, ESD is encrypted and is usually how WIM files are published in Windows Update.

ESD images are created from WIM using the LZMS compression algorithm and this is done using what is known as “solid compression”. This means that the files are not individually compressed which is why ESD files cannot be assembled or easily customized or tweaked, unlike WIM. However, the advantage is that ESD files are smaller than WIM.
