TikTok Users Have Created Their Own Economy With Cats And “Dabloons”

Weird TikTok trends are nothing new. It seems like every week there’s a weird new style of video bombarding the platform. Just last week, users were making videos of tragic situations ruined by Koopa’s famous dance, while the week before people were fascinated by that scene from Modern Warfare 2 where Ghost looks sideways at Soap.

Now TikTok has a new trend and it’s arguably the weirdest of them all. If you’ve used the platform for more than five seconds in the past few days, chances are you’ve encountered the dabloon cat. It’s videos like these that have allowed TikTok users to set up their own economy entirely within the app, as the dabloon cat will give you a few dabloons (usually four) to spend on goods and services from other dabloon cats with their own shops. .

If you can think of it, there’s probably a dabloon cat out there that’s offering it up, be it food, clothing, jewelry, and even housing. Users apparently even have jobs they can take, from which they will earn dabloons to spend on more items. Most users then keep track of their dabloons and the items they own in a notes app on their phone or in a Google Doc, all to prevent the economy from crashing.

You might be thinking, what’s stopping me from making my own video, giving everyone a billion dabloons, and completely ruining the economy? Dabloon inflation of course! There is a set of self-imposed rules that seem to be respected by the vast majority of users in the trend, the most important being that no one can give away more than 100 dabloons. If someone does, you’ll usually find the comment section of your video flooded with angry users and sometimes a bunch of “dabloon thieves” taking your doubloons for themselves.

Yes, there are dabloon thieves and the community takes them very seriously. Instead of giving away dabloons, dabloon cats sometimes steal all the dabloons someone owns, leaving them penniless. To counter this, people have been giving away or selling guard dogs, immunity potions, and magic charms that you can also buy with dabloons. There’s even dabloon insurance if you really want to cover all your bases.

It’s definitely one of the more ridiculous trends to emerge from TikTok in recent memory, but you can’t help but admire the creativity and willingness to cooperate with complete strangers on something so completely bizarre. If you’re a dabloon user reading these words right here, may your economy prosper for a long time, because it can’t be doing much worse than the real world economy right now.
