Users of Windows 11 Insider Dev Channel build 26120.961 (KB5038575) will see new features

Published on

Two weeks ago, Microsoft released a new Windows 11 update for Insider Program members in the Dev channel. The build number was 26120.961, under KB5038575. At the time, the update was minor with only a few unnamed general improvements.

Today, Microsoft will roll out new features, improvements, and bug fixes for people who have the Windows 11 development channel build 26120.961 and have turned on their switch in the Windows Update section of the Settings menu to get the latest updates.

Microsoft added:

We’re rolling these out at a small percentage at first, so not everyone in the development channel with this toggle enabled will see all of these features right away. And some features may appear while others may not yet. We hope to further expand the rollout of these new features, changes and improvements and fixes with the next new build of the Dev channel. Associates will need to reboot to see if they got these features enabled.

Here is the changelog. Keep in mind that Dev Channel updates are based on the upcoming Windows 11, version 24H2.

New features are gradually rolled out to the development channel upon activation

Narrator users can now use voice access to dictate text hands-free

Narrator users can start using voice access in Windows 11 to dictate text with voice and hear what is being dictated. Additionally, you can also use voice access to give commands to Narrator. For example, “Turn on Narrator”, “Speak faster”, “Read the selection”, “Read the next line”, etc.

To know the entire list of Narrator commands supported by voice access, click the help icon (?) in the voice access bar, select “Show all commands” and select “Rainer commands”.

What will work:

  • Start and set up voice access which includes downloading a speech model.
  • Read a list of Voice Access and Narrator commands from the Voice Access Help menu.
  • Change voice access microphone mode.
  • You dictated text out loud and heard back what was dictated.

tips:

  • If you are not using headphones to listen to the screen reader, the audio output from the screen reader may be picked up by the voice access microphone, leading to unwanted behavior.

Auto restart for voice access and a new voice access command for Windows Search

We’re introducing automatic restart for voice access in Windows 11. This feature ensures that voice access restarts automatically if it encounters any problems, so people with mobility disabilities can get back to using voice access as quickly as possible. Customers will no longer need to rely on alternative assistive technologies or assistance from others to re-enable voice access. If voice access restarts automatically due to a crash, we make it easy to report these crashes once voice access is restarted so that the team can investigate and work on fixes.

We introduce a new command to search directly with Windows Search. Users can now say the search command “entity”; Search Windows for “Entity”; Or search for “entity” to search for the application or file they want in Windows (“entity” is replaced by whatever application or file you want to search for.)

[Emoji]

We’re adding support in Emoji 15.1 which introduces a small number of brand new emoji, such as horizontal and vertical head shake, phoenix, lime, brown mushrooms, and broken chain. Other changes for Emoji 15.1 include Unicode’s decision to return family combinations to symbol-like shapes. Windows chose to stick with our existing style that uses people in family combinations. We also support the new orientation updates for walking, kneeling, walking, running, manual wheelchair and motorized wheelchair. You can now choose a right-facing or the original left-facing orientation for these emojis.

  • To ensure you don’t lose access to your Microsoft account, we’re starting to roll out a new banner with an “Add Now” button under Settings > Account to add a recovery email address if you haven’t added an address for your Microsoft account yet. It will only show if you are signed in with a Microsoft account.
  • We’re starting to roll out updated visuals for the Rename Your Computer and Change Date and Time dialogs to match the Windows 11 visuals.
