Fans of The Walking Dead know that the comic book series ended some time ago, but they still have almost two hundred issues to read filled with fascinating and horrifying zombie adventures. Robert Kirkman, the show’s creator, has admitted that he omitted a popular fan request—zombie animals—on purpose. In issue #62 of The Walking Dead, Kirkman said unequivocally that non-human animals will never become zombies. In the issue’s “Letter Hacks” section, a reader inquired if there will be any zombie cats. Kirkman’s unwavering response: “No zombie animals, that’s a rule.” Kirkman said that the concept of zombie animals is intriguing, but that it just wouldn’t work logistically in his post-apocalyptic universe. There is no need to add to the terror of zombies by including undead big cats and bears. Further, Kirkman warned that undead animals will be far more destructive than human zombies due to their inherent savagery and difficulty of control brought on by their basic impulses. It made logical to exclude animals from the zombie equation, and the thought of a healthy ecosystem without human involvement was too intriguing to ignore. Although it may be upsetting to some viewers, Kirkman had good reasons for not include zombie animals in The Walking Dead. Adding zombie household pets and wild animals to the mix would have compounded an already complex plot. So, we’ll just have to appreciate the wonderful narrative that Kirkman did deliver and wonder what may have been.
