With its reputation for gory deaths and foul language, the Mortal Kombat video game series seems an unlikely candidate for a crossover with the family-friendly Disney. Wreck-It Ralph is Disney’s latest animated film, and it has an unexpected cameo from a Mortal Kombat character. Video game bad guys like Bowser and Dr. Robotnik are joined in the scene by the amusing villain Kano from Mortal Kombat. Kano even recreates his signature killing move, ripping the zombie’s heart out of its chest. The fact that Wreck-It Ralph is set in a universe where the characters are aware they are part of a video game makes this reference to the Mortal Kombat series all the more astute. Even though fans know the character to be Kano, he is referred to as Cyborg in the film. When Frost appears as an opponent in Mortal Kombat 11, numerous battle intros make references to the popular Disney film Frozen. It’s a great example of the trademark wit of the Mortal Kombat series and a humorous tribute to the crossover. Even if it’s just for a short period, it’s always exciting to witness famous characters from various series cross over into one other’s universes.
