The user is notified when she tried to launch Cortana on Windows 11 after installing the above mentioned update, that the application was deprecated. It also provides an extension of the support page, which will explain in more detail why the voice assistant is banned.

Microsoft is also working on setting up a console for Cortana in the Teams, Teams Display and Teams Rooms. The exact date of the shutdown is not known, but it is said that it will happen in the fall of 2023. Curiously, Cortana will remain available in Outlook Mobile at least for now.

From the beginning, the Cortana project developed a virtual assistant for Windows Phone. In 2015, Microsoft added the voice assistant in Windows 10, where it received deep integration with the taskbar and could perform several commands. It’s a major reason for Cortana’s fate. Microsoft failed to develop the Windows Phone platform. While Cortana has struggled to reach the next level with other rivals such as Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, in 2019, the CEO of Microsoft Satya Nadella acknowledged it had lagged behind the competition.
