Microsoft has released the latest build of Windows 11 for members of the Windows Insider program who signed up to receive updates in the Canary Channel. The new build number is 26212. This is the first Canary channel build update since April 19th.

Among other things, this new Canary Channel Windows 11 build adds a way for people to generate QR codes for URLs and more. Here is the changelog:

changes and improvements

[Windows Share]

  • Users will now be able to generate QR codes for URLs and cloud file links through the Windows Share window to seamlessly share web pages and files between their devices. To try this in Microsoft Edge, just click the Share button in the Edge toolbar and select “Windows Sharing Options”.

  • To prevent accidentally closing the Windows Sharing window, clicking outside the Windows Sharing window will no longer close it. To close the Windows Sharing window, simply click the close button in the upper right corner.
  • If your Microsoft account uses a Gmail address, you can now send email to yourself from the Windows Share window and receive it in your Gmail account.

[Copilot in Windows]

  • Over the past few months, we’ve been testing different experiences for Copilot on Windows (preview) with Windows Insiders in the Canary, Dev, and Beta channels. Some of these experiences include the ability for Copilot on Windows to act like a normal application window and the animated taskbar icon to indicate that Copilot can help when copying text or images. We’ve decided to pause the launch of these experiences to further refine them based on user feedback. Copilot on Windows will continue to work as expected as we continue to develop new ideas with Windows Insiders.

Fixes for known issues

[General]

  • Fixed the issue that caused the advanced boot options to not work. It also fixes the progress wheel not appearing on startup.
  • We believe we have fixed the issue that caused Features on Demand (FODs) to not install.

[Copilot in Windows]

  • We’re rolling out a fix for an issue that causes Copilot to auto-start unexpectedly for Windows Insiders in the Canary, Dev, and Beta channels after restarting their PCs. This issue was not related to the auto-launch experience we tried with Insiders on the Canary and Dev channels in early February, which we stopped rolling out in March.

[Taskbar & System Tray]

  • Fixed an issue that caused the taskbar to be partially off-screen on secondary monitors.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Narrator to be silent while rearranging your apps on the taskbar.

[File Explorer]

  • Fixed an issue that caused File Explorer to crash sporadically when using path suggestions in the address bar.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause File Explorer to sometimes crash when switching from the search box to the File Explorer body.

[Windowing]

  • Fixed some DWM crashes, which could cause the screen to flicker.

[Other]

  • Fixed an issue that caused some people to repeatedly see a message saying live captions are missing.
  • Fixed an underlying issue that caused Visual Studio to fail to debug x64 .NET framework terminal applications (the application would crash on ntdll.dll on load).

known problems

[General]

  • [IMPORTANT NOTE] We’re investigating reports that some Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev channel are stuck on Build 26040 or Build 23620. The investigation is ongoing, but if you’re affected and really want to get on the latest Canary or Dev channel today – you can download the latest ISO here and perform a clean install and select your device back to flights on the Canary or Dev channel.
