You have until May 2024 before Xbox starts deleting your game capture, here’s how to back up

Published on

In September 2023, Microsoft Xbox announced that it would begin automatically deleting game captures and images stored on the Xbox Network. This automatic deletion was applied to game captures and images at least 90 days old. The first batch of deletions was scheduled to occur in January 2024.

It is speculated that this did not happen because Xbox postponed its plans. However, according to a new Xbox announcement shared by a Reddit user, VolcandesuraXbox has announced that it will begin deleting game capture starting May 30, 2024.

While it’s unclear if anyone has been affected by Microsoft deleting game capture in January 2024, per the previous announcement, it looks like we now have until May 30, 2024 to back up all of our game footage and images. The photos that are at least 90 days old and stored on the Xbox network are again affected by the new message.

It should be noted that images on the Xbox Network refer to screenshots or images uploaded to Xbox servers, not images stored locally on the console. But to be safe, we suggest you take a backup of all screenshots and images of your favorite game on an external hard drive or use any of the cloud storage options.

To back up your game captures on your Xbox;

  1. go to My games and apps.
  2. choose applications.
  3. choose catching.
  4. Here you can transfer them to OneDrive, an external hard drive or USB.

You also get the option to change the location and set up future captures for automatic storage in OneDrive. This will ensure that everything is backed up, and you don’t have to worry about losing the screenshots and photos of your favorite game. Keep in mind that the free version of OneDrive offers a 5GB limit.
