Microsoft has revealed the end of support and availability dates for the classic Teams app

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced that it would give people still using the classic Teams desktop app more time to make the switch to the newer “Teams 2.0” version, until at least July 1, 2024. This week, the company offered more concrete information about when classic Teams support will end and when it will be completely unavailable for use.

After that date, Microsoft will no longer release updates, fixes, or new features for classic Teams users.

While the classic Teams app won’t get any more updates after July 1st, it will still be useful for people and businesses who haven’t yet moved to the new Teams desktop app, but after July 1st, classic Teams users will see an additional warning message, letting them know it’s no longer supported. These message warnings can be turned off, but they will still appear occasionally to people who are still using the older app.

However, the real day of reckoning is when the classic Teams app will no longer work at all. Microsoft announced that anyone using Teams classic on older, unsupported operating systems (Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and macOS Sierra 10.12) will begin seeing warnings in August that the app will no longer work after October 23, 2024. After that date, those users who try to use In the app they will see another notification saying that their use of the app is now blocked. These users can continue to access Teams in supported web browsers.

For all other users, turning off the classic Teams app will take a little longer, but it will happen. Classic Teams will be deprecated on all supported Windows and MacOS operating systems on July 1, 2025.
