A sneak peek at the horror movie The Strangers: Chapter 1 was taken off Day One of New York Comic Con in 2023, as well with a look inside what is being planned for this ambitious new project.

Though the films are based on The Home invasion thriller of 2008 by Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, it isn’t a remake or reboot. Those trilogy of movies is an extension to the franchise, and film director Renny Harlin explained that in attendance it was “Draw Mare on Elm Street: The Dreams 2”, or “A Nightmara on Illo Road,” but by its screenwriter Courtney Solomon. They also showed three exclusive clips from Chapter 1 and even brought along the masks that actors used to portray Stranger are wearing during production.

The release schedule of the trilogy was confirmed in an audience Q&A as promised during the final stage where all three films have been shot and planned to be published in 2024 if Lionsgate agree will this condensed release schedule. The duo were quite tight, however about spilling a few plot details around the second and third films.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 stars Madelaine Petsch (Riverdale) and Froy Gutierrez on a cross-country tour to start new life in the Pacific Northwest. But they dream of happiness by terrorists in horrifying costumes while vacationing on Airbnb.

A friend of mine called me and said he was entitled to do more Strangers movies. And asked him whether I wanted or not, explained Solomon as well! This is a well-known horror movie. Because of the realness, it could happen to anybody. Because of that, I think it’s interesting and compelling.

When creator Josh Horowitz, the hosts of Happy Sad Confused podcasts remarked that this project marked Harlin’ return to horror in many years after all.

I must acknowledge my mother’s horror roots, says Finnish writer. She showed me Psycho at her age six. When I was 8 years old, I graduated with Rosemary. I love horror because it made me think about different kinds of stories. We go to the movies for a reason. And then we can go back to our everyday lives. And the original Strangers is one of my favourite movies ever.

Harlin was eager to tackle this project, but admitted that he was shocked when Solomon handed him two-thirds of the script. After reading this article, I called Courtney for 9 hours. He explained there was a plan to get more deeply into the room than just re-itiating, says Harlin! And I was asking for it. I want to do that for the fans and more recently, so this isn’t possible at all.

We looked at the original movie for inspiration and subsequent articles. We wanted to reboot the original and pay tribute, so we got through with a 288-page script that Renny always reminds me of.

The massive script was created by accident. From the beginning, so did the idea of telling one interconnected story. This would be divided into three cinematic chapters that were to stand alone while showing how characters changed continuously and again acted as evolutions in action for themselves on time at once now (before it was done).

For us, it is shot as one giant movie even though its three separate films are still together.”

As for any movie, the script got changed on a long time. Salvator said the best advantage in directing all three movies at once, is that it allowed him to spot some scenes which didn’t work anymore.

The three clips that the audience showed all show Maya in different stages of distress. The film’s antagonist, the masked Stranger appear in each. One scene in which Maya lives has remained creepy with the 2008 original, and Solomon says The Strangers trilogy features many Easter eggs for diehard fans of that original.

Harlin says he wanted to use sound instead of jump scares, in order for the audience. We don’t want to distract the public, or create jump scares with more words when they say hello. In the tape that was recorded in one of The Panel’s clips, he noted how music didn’t play up or down; for him it was just a small sound effect and provided an alarming feeling to get all excited.

Many actors were auditioned for Maya’s role, but nobody impressed Harlin and Solomon more than Petsch. When we were in the interview with Mads, Solomon said. The Strangers is his favorite horror movie. And she took 21 pages of notes for the interview on her own, which means that she had 21 words to write a story in every other paragraph or second Renny and I stood up about five minutes chatting in advance. We knew that we were talking to each other at the time of closing doors, but didn’t know how they would do it all without knowing when one started opening door for them!

Liv Tyler did an unbelievable job, said Harlan. How do we replace them? We wanted something new. Someone who is a regular person, looks vulnerable and experience any difficulties. We felt that when we shot the film, you had won a lottery. I don’t think any other actor will do what she does in this movie.

Both Harlin and Solomon noted that shooting three films is an immense challenge for all involved, but especially the actors. But they said Petsch made it look easy.

If you shoot Chapters 1, 2, 3 with a young actress where she goes through huge character lines, the trust should be there. And she hasn’t let us down. She always knew where she should be every day.

Harlins is littered with fast-seeking movie stars, so that a big profit from the filmography starts when someone watches himself.

He recalls when I saw my first hit film Nightmare 4. The manager of the studio gave me a limousine, and we went to see how people react. We went to a theater on Sunset Blvd. and saw that people all around the block, asked myself what was happening with me? He said, Renny that they’re here for the movie you are watching. When the audience responds to your film, he changes life.

One area where Harlin knew that he didn’t have enough room for error was with the masks worn by killer men. Those masks were the highlight of the Stranger’an original movie. The director says they’re iconic. There is no secret vault in Hollywood, where we can find out the Strangers mask. We had to get them back.

Harlin wanted to change the masks for 2023, but just slightly. He was always adamant they remain faithful to the originals. Quite many people failed to make them. She says we needed him to work in any lighting situation. The masks weren’t finished before filming.

The masks fit each actor perfectly. When filming began, only two masks gave a whole lot of anxiety in the process. If one’d broken, we would have been screwes. Harlin admitted to that she believes so!

Before we decided to do some research, there were two important details in the Strangers trilogy. First, the timeframe for all three films spans only a few days. The whole scene of the second movie follows a last scene in its first book, and then again from the third.

The other big reveal is that the third movie will tell you about my thoughts on the truth of the Strangers. Harlin says that the final of a third film was complete overhauled while it’s being produced, and calls for an original version extremely satisfying. Harlin added that he believes the audience will be stunned with what are his story’s conclusions.
