Samsung announces its fastest LPDDR5X memory chips with reduced energy consumption

Published on

Today, Samsung unveiled its latest advancements in DRAM, namely new LPDDR5X chips with improved performance, higher capacity and significantly reduced energy consumption. The South Korean tech giant says the new chips aim to deliver higher performance and reliability in personal computers, mobile devices, cars, servers and other products.

Samsung’s newest LDDR5X memory chips are built in a 12nm process, providing the smallest chip size among LPDDR solutions from other manufacturers. These chips can operate at speeds of up to 10.7 Gbps, which is a 25% improvement in performance compared to the previous generation.

In addition, the company increased the capacity by 30%, reaching 32GB in one package. According to Samsung, this makes its new memory chips “an optimal solution for the AI era in a device that requires high-performance, high-capacity, low-power memory.”

Speaking of power, Samsung’s latest LPDDR5X memory chips use new power-saving technologies to adjust power consumption according to a specific workload. They also feature extended low-mode intervals for extended periods of energy saving. All these improvements make the new memory 25% more energy efficient than the previous generation chips, providing improved battery life while offering better performance.

YongCheol Bae, senior vice president of memory product planning of the memory business at Samsung Electronics, had the following to say about the launch:

As demand for low-power, high-performance memory increases, LPDDR DRAM is expected to expand its applications from mobile devices primarily to other areas that traditionally require higher performance and reliability such as personal computers, accelerators, servers, and automobiles.

Samsung will continue to innovate and deliver products adapted to the upcoming AI era in the device through close cooperation with customers.

Samsung will start producing its latest LPDDR5X memory chips in the second half of the year after they are approved by device and processor manufacturers. You can find more information On the official Samsung Newsroom blog.
