The new hidden Start menu layout in Windows 11 is getting more improvements

Published on

The Start menu in Windows 11 is a controversial piece of design that scares some Windows 10 users, especially in light of the fact that Microsoft is disabling apps for customizing the user interface and adding blatant ads. However, the company is also working on some user-requested improvements, especially for the All Apps section.

Users recently discovered that the Windows 11 Beta build contains a hidden “All Apps” layout that replaces the current — and less space-optimized — option with a combination of grid and list. It was first spotted in a fairly raw state, and after a few more Good Changes, build 22635.3566 brought more needed improvements.

Now, in addition to context menus working properly and alphabetical sorting, the new layout shows shortcut folders for apps registered in the Start menu with additional links, such as uninstall, help, and more. Also, Microsoft removed the lines next to each sort letter, making the new layout a bit more refined.

However, just like the previous build, the new “All Apps” layout in 22635.3566 is half-baked and not ready for prime time. Yes, it shows folders, but clicking on one causes the start menu to crash hopelessly. That’s why Microsoft isn’t shipping the thing yet, so expect more changes and improvements in future builds.

As a reminder, you can enable the new “All Apps” view for the Start menu in recent betas by running a command using the ViVeTool app:

  1. Download ViveTool M GitHub and unpack the files in a convenient and easy-to-locate folder.
  2. to press Win+X and choose terminal (admin).
  3. Switch Windows Terminal to the command line profile with the Ctrl+Shift+2 shortcut or by clicking the down arrow button at the top of the window.
  4. Navigate to the folder containing the ViveTool files using the CD command. For example, if you placed ViveTool in C:\Vive, type CD C:\Vive.
  5. Type vivetool /enable /id:48433719 and pressure to enter.
  6. Type vivetool /enable /id:47205210 /variant:2 and pressure to enter.
  7. Restart the computer.
