WhatsApp announces support for passkeys on iOS

Published on

WhatsApp has announced that it will launch key support on iOS, a new authentication method that allows users to sign in using secure authentication methods like facial recognition or biometrics, eliminating the need to create and type a passcode.

Passkeys can be used with Face ID or Touch ID on Apple devices, and are more secure than traditional passwords because they are uniquely generated for each account by the user’s device and are less vulnerable to spoofing because they eliminate the need to create and type a passcode. Based on FIDO authentication, password keys have been proven to be resistant to phishing threats, credential obfuscation and other remote attacks. Password keys managed by phone or computer operating systems are automatically synchronized between user devices via a cloud-based service.

WhatsApp is not the only app that implements support for password unlockers, many apps, including Google and Amazon, are starting to adopt this technology as well. WhatsApp announced for the first time Password key support A year ago, but only the Android equivalent of the chat app got support for it. The support and accelerated rollout of password keys could also be due to the regulations set forth in the Digital Markets Act (DMA) that went live last year in May.

The platform has also developed a new option to allow users to transfer files offline with nearby people, an in-app dialer, and an iPad app is also in the works.

While the rollout will take time to reach everyone, WhatsApp says you’ll see the option to set up keys under Settings > Account > Passkeys.
